​Short North Stage will present its 2013-14 season opening with the classic Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine musical, Sunday in the Park with George. One of the most acclaimed musicals of our time, this moving study of the enigmatic painter Georges Seurat won a Pulitzer Prize for its deeply insightful and highly personal examination of life through art and the artist. The work focuses on the creation of Seurat’s classic painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. An ensemble of strong singing actors performs this challenging and heartbreaking work about our need to connect to the past, present and future. Sunday in the Park will be directed by New York-based Sarna Lapine, who is the niece of the author, James Lapine. She was also the assistant director for Lincoln Center Theater’s productions of South Pacific, The Light in the Piazza, and War Horse. She is also the Associate Director for the national tour of War Horse, which played in Columbus last spring. Tony Award-winning sound designer Leon Rothenberg, set designer Mikiko Suzuki McAdams, and lighting designer Michael Boll will also bring their talents to work with the resident technical team at Short North Stage. Musical Direction by acclaimed Swedish composer-orchestrator Nils-Petter Ankarblom. Costumes by Terese Wadden, and Puppetry Design by Matt Acheson.
