Technical Director Job Description

Designation: Regular Full-Time (RFT), In-person

Reports to the Producing Artistic Director

Supports Productions, Artistic Director and all Artistic Office activities.

Salary Range: $60,000–$70,000 with benefits

Overview

  • This is a hands-on leadership position primarily responsible for guiding and executing the scenic builds with a small staff.  Strong project leadership, drafting and scenic carpentry skills are essential.  Scenic Painting, rigging and automation skills are a plus. 

  • Responsible for operating, protecting, and maintaining the theater’s technical assets, while also managing and overseeing the different technical departments, including set, lighting, costumes, props, sound, and effects.

  • Manage relations and communications with the production manager, head carpenter, and other departments as needed.

  • Ensure that all AEA requirements are met and are up to date

Responsibilities:

  • Setting and enforcing safe-use guidelines for equipment

  • Routinely performing (or delegating) preventative maintenance on equipment

  • Purchasing new equipment and replacing failing equipment as needed

  • Keeping an inventory of the theater's technical supplies

  • Overseeing and assisting throughout tech week and the load-in/load-out process

  • Acting as the last line of defense for technical problems

  • Advising production managers, directors, and designers on feasibility, cost, and equipment capabilities

  • Turning designer's sketches into shop plans used by carpenters

  • 80% of the job is helping build 

Financial

  • Support the AD and staff to maintain production budgets for each season.

  • Submit timely expense reports and keep track of technical budgets

Organizational Management

  • Foster an environment of clear communications and expectations with staff.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Attend regular Artistic Office and Production Team meetings.

  • Plan and execute special events throughout the season as requested (fundraisers, talk-backs, opening night receptions, etc.).

  • Initiate and/or respond to all internal and external communications in a timely, thorough manner via phone, email or other options.

Requirements: 

  • Training in a BFA technical theater program or similar professional experience

  • 5+ years experience in the industry

  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds

  • Vectorworks & CAD

  • Experience with drafting scenic designs and shop plans

  • Leadership experience

  • Problem solving skills

  • Comfortable with Autonomy
