Assistant Technical Director Job Description

Designation: Full Time In-person ($50-55k)

Reports to the Technical Director

Supports Productions and other Technical Staff

Overview

  • Under the supervision of the technical director, this position is responsible for the construction, mounting, and rigging of the scenery

  • Supervise any additional crew in the actual construction of set pieces. 

  • Help with load ins, show maintenance, and set strikes.

  • Responsible for the maintenance of the scene-shop equipment and supplies.

  • Is the main Scenery contact in the room, charged with receiving and implementing build drawings, keeping the space and supplies organized, and staying in communication with the Production Manager and Technical Director

Organizational Management

  • Foster an environment of clear communications and expectations with staff.

  • Work closely with the Technical Director and Production Manager to facilitate a positive working environment.

  • Submit all receipts on time, adhere to budgets created by the TD.

  • Help create organizational systems for the shop and theater.

  • Work with extra hires to finish projects on time.

Qualifications: 

  • 3+ years of theater experience managing people and running carpentry crews in a build/ load-in capacity

  • Comprehensive knowledge of standard scenery construction practices and techniques (wood and metal)

  • Proficient in the use of and operating saws, power tools, welding equipment,
    pneumatics and hydraulic equipment.

  • Must be comfortable at working at heights of 15’+ and able to lift/carry 50 lbs

  • Experience with welding (MIG) and general metal working a plus, but not required

  • Theatrical rigging knowledge and practical experience a plus, but not required

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills

  • The ability to work calmly while under pressure in a fast-paced environment, with multiple departments working under strict deadlines.

  • Ability to have occasional flexible work hours
