Short North Stage – Columbus, Ohio

Position Type: Regular Full-Time (RFT), In-Person
Reports To: Producing Artistic Director
Salary Range: $60,000–$65,000 annually + benefits

Position Overview

Short North Stage seeks a highly organized and hands-on Technical Director to oversee the technical operations of our theatre and support the successful execution of all productions and special events.

This leadership position blends the organizational coordination of a Production Manager with the technical expertise of a traditional Technical Director. The Technical Director manages the theatre’s technical infrastructure, supports production teams across departments, and ensures the safe and effective use of all technical equipment.

Unlike many TD roles, this position does not manage a scenic shop, but instead focuses on the coordination, maintenance, and execution of technical elements across productions.

The Technical Director works closely with the Producing Artistic Director, designers, stage management, and production staff to ensure that each Short North Stage production is delivered safely, efficiently, and at the highest artistic level.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Operations

  • Oversee the operation, protection, and maintenance of all theatre technical systems and equipment

  • Establish and enforce safe-use procedures for technical equipment and backstage operations

  • Perform or delegate preventative maintenance on lighting, sound, rigging, and other technical systems

  • Purchase new equipment and replace aging or failing equipment as needed

  • Serve as the primary technical problem-solver during rehearsals, tech week, and performances

  • Assist with and supervise production load-ins, technical rehearsals, and strikes

Production Collaboration

  • Coordinate communication across production departments including scenery, lighting, costumes, props, sound, and effects

  • Advise directors and designers on feasibility, technical capabilities, and budget considerations

  • Ensure productions meet all Actors’ Equity Association (AEA) requirements and safety standards

  • Occasionally draft or build small technical elements not covered by external shops

Financial Management

  • Support the Artistic Director and production staff in maintaining production budgets

  • Track technical expenses and submit timely expense reports

  • Help identify cost-effective solutions for production needs

Organizational Leadership

  • Foster a culture of clear communication, accountability, and collaboration among staff, designers, and contractors

  • Participate in Artistic Office and Production Team meetings

  • Help coordinate technical support for special events including fundraisers, talkbacks, and opening night receptions

  • Respond to internal and external communications in a timely and professional manner

Qualifications

  • BFA in Technical Theatre or equivalent professional experience

  • 5+ years of professional theatre experience

  • Strong leadership and team coordination skills

  • Experience with Vectorworks, CAD drafting, and technical documentation

  • Experience drafting scenic designs and shop plans

  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities

  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs

Spelling Bee Sound Designer/ Mixer

Position Title: Contract Sound Designer & Mixer – The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Organization: Short North Stage
Production Dates: May 14 – June 7
Tech Week: Week of May 4 (exact schedule to be coordinated with the production team)
Compensation: $3,500 total stipend (contracted position)

Position Overview

Short North Stage seeks a Contract Sound Designer and Mixer for its upcoming production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. This position will be responsible for designing, installing, and operating the sound system for the production, ensuring clear vocal reinforcement and consistent audio quality for both rehearsals and performances.

This role is ideal for a sound professional experienced in musical theatre reinforcement, wireless microphone systems, and live mixing, particularly in intimate theatre environments.

Responsibilities

Sound Design

  • Create the sound design for the production, including reinforcement, effects, and playback as needed

  • Work with the director, music director, and production team to determine sound requirements

  • Program and prepare playback and cueing systems prior to technical rehearsals

System Setup

  • Install and configure the sound system for the production, including speakers, microphones, and playback equipment

  • Prepare and manage wireless microphone systems for performers

  • Coordinate system setup with the production team during load-in

Technical Rehearsals

  • Attend technical rehearsals during the week prior to opening

  • Program sound cues and refine the mix in collaboration with the creative team

  • Ensure all sound equipment is functioning properly before opening

Performance Mixing

  • Mix each performance of the production to maintain clear and balanced sound throughout the run

  • Monitor microphone levels, orchestra/track balance, and playback cues during performances

  • Troubleshoot any sound issues that arise during the run

Qualifications

  • Experience designing and mixing live musical theatre productions

  • Strong knowledge of digital mixing consoles, wireless microphone systems, and playback software

  • Ability to manage sound systems in a fast-paced theatrical environment

  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills

Compensation

This is a contracted position with a total stipend of $3,500, covering sound design, system setup, technical rehearsals, and mixing all performances.
